On the non-profit side, Brian leads audit/tax engagements for community development organizations, human service agencies and HUD funded organizations. A core client focus area for Brian is leading audit engagements for housing and redevelopment authorities. He also leads audit and tax engagements for non-profit and for-profit organizations that develop, finance and administer multi-family housing programs. Another core focus area for Brian is directing audit engagements for transportation agencies, and he has extensive knowledge of PennDOT financial reporting requirements.
An enthusiast when it comes to utilizing technologies to enhance the efficiency of the audit process, Brian has led the implementation of multiple software projects for the firm. These initiatives have significantly streamlined the audit process. This has had a significant positive impact on the level of efficiency Maher Duessel can offer our clients while also freeing up our clients' time substantially during the audit process.
Due to his experience in serving agencies supported with federal funds, Brian has a specialized insight into all aspects of compliance with the Uniform Guidance and Single Audit requirements. He has the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA's) Advanced Single Audit Certification. Brian routinely presents seminars on governmental accounting and auditing topics for several professional associations including the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), the Local Government Academy (LGA), and the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP).
Brian serves as the Designated Partner for Maher Duessel’s compliance with the AICPA's Governmental Audit Quality Center, a voluntary membership center for firms and state audit organizations that perform governmental audits. He is also involved in multiple accounting committees at the national and state levels, including the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Special Review Committee for Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports and the PICPA's Local Government and Professional Ethics Committees. Through this extensive committee involvement, Brian consistently is able to bring information on the latest regulatory changes impacting his clients' audits. Complying with a changing regulatory environment can be a stressful process at times, but Brian is able to guide his clients to solutions that are both compliant and realistic.
